Summer Recommendation #1: Street art outdoor lectures

You can use sunny days and nice weather in the city for active socializing and urban exploration. Remember the sentence: "Get to know your city to love it more"? This is exactly the principle on the basis of which open-air street art lectures were organized by the "Street Art Belgrade" association.

In addition to spending quality time outside, the participants get to know those features of Belgrade that they may not notice at first glance. The pearls of street art are presented in the tour but through the prism of the history of the capital. We offer several city locations: Savamala, Gornji Dorcol, Donji Dorcol, Vracar, New Belgrade and Topcider.

Street art walks last about 2.5 hours, and groups are organized depending on the number of participants, up to 10 and up to 20 people. The lecturers are art historians who have been researching graffiti and street art for several decades.

Summer recommendation #2: Souvenirs to be proud of from Novi Sad

Souvenirs are unavoidable "luggage" from a trip to remember, but also a great gift for friends abroad. In one store in the centre of Novi Sad, they are works of art and an occasion to happily tell at least a part of the history and tradition of our region through them.

Among the products, carpets are proposed to UNESCO as an intangible cultural asset, Zmijanje, which is already under the protection of UNESCO, and abyssal damask, specific in that, as in 1881, when it arrived in Serbia, the same machines were used.

Summer Recommendation #3: Common Language Exhibition

The Youth Biennale, an international exhibition of contemporary art that will feature works by authors of the younger generation, will be held for the first time this year under the title Common Language. The exhibition does not speak on behalf of the individual, but communicates through a common signifier "we" and establishes a body that speaks a common language. Such language is a constellation of symbols, hashtags, neologisms, emojis, but not only that. It is the communication system of the emerging revolutionary collective. It is a meeting place of a new generation that communicates in a different way, somewhat encrypted for the previous ones, through new rules, new challenges, new tendencies.

The curators of the exhibition, Senka Latinović, Teodora Jeremić and Jovana Trifuljesko (photo below), establish an overlap and find a system in which different but equal curatorial concepts are formed, reflecting the Youth Biennale as a place that meets the common needs of all involved in its creation. performing works of art, but also building discourse and distributing knowledge.

Curatorial workshops and educational programs were organized within the entire event in cooperation with ULUS members and other cultural and artistic actors of the local contemporary scene.

Geanina M. Zaharia / a graphic art detached from an unic poetic imaginary

A graduate of the “George Enescu” National University of Arts in Iași, Geanina Maria Zaharia studied at the Faculty of Visual Arts and Design, specializing in Graphics (bachelor's degree) and specializing in Graphics / 3D Amination within the master's program. Even before her university artistic studies, the young artist stood out in various local and national art competitions, winning numerous awards. She early outlined a way of self-representation, a way that she carved out even more under the guidance of her teachers from UNAGE Iasi. She works very well in more than one artistic medium - drawing, painting, mixed media, collage and digital art.

Looking at a series of works signed by Geanina, such as those that illustrate this material, we can see a graphic that denotes its own poetics, with an accentuated imaginary tint and a vivid chromatic. In other words, we find in her graphics the fragments of fairytale worlds. She then followed this aspect with a predilection for the master's degree, in the 3D graphics she made for the animation short films she had to prepare for the courses and then as a final project of the dissertation. Geanina and her colleagues were the first generation of graphic designers from UNAGE Iași who studied 3D Amination at the master's program in Graphics. The practical part of Geanina's dissertation was a short episode from a fairy tale, a story made entirely by her, both practical and conceptual. For this material she provided me with some frames from the video.

But before the master's degree, Geanina's graphics were strictly in line with the rules of traditional graphics. She made numerous compositions in pencil, pen and watercolor. Her works always had complex compositions, on which she worked meticulously, for hours, on which she always returned a few times to retouch or add new elements. I can say all this as an “eyewitness”, because I often watched her while she was working, being her roommate for a few years at the faculty. So I know her closely as a friend and as an artist. Geanina is a very detailed, meditative graphic designer who puts a lot of effort into everything she does. Her physical and inner beauty is reflected in every graphic composition she has made so far. To try to get to know her, even in the case of those who have not met her physically, it is enough to see her graphics. A truth valid for every artist. If you know how to look, the art in front of you will reveal a lot about the person behind it - the time of composition, the chromatics, the favorite subjects, the artistic manner, all are indications of the artist's intention and his psychology.

For the past two years, Geanina has worked almost entirely on digital and 3D graphics. In fact, she custom-makes individual, couple or family portraits, book illustrations, company logos and personalized wedding invitations with portraits. Group exhibition "In a healthy body" at the November Gallery

The group exhibition Summer Flickers, which is traditionally held every summer at the November Gallery, this year is called In a Healthy Body and aims to point out a new perspective of observing the body, and the ability to accept and see it as "healthy" regardless differences and imposed discourses.

In an age of pandemics, when physical and mental health is the focus of our attention, it is time to ask ourselves about the concept of health as a social norm. In the past, abnormal bodies, behaviors, sexualities, or mental structures have been referred to in discourse as "disease," "madness," or "abnormality." In this context, queer people were labeled as "sick", and homosexuality as a sexual practice was considered deviant, and therefore their bodies were viewed as stigmatized by these labels. The struggle of the queer community for liberation from this discourse has been long, and unfortunately still continues.

A group exhibition entitled "Summer Flickers: In a Healthy Body" will be held at the November Gallery from July 22 to August 29. Aleksandra Branković, Nikola Dimitrović, Dunja Đolović, Kosta Đuraković, and Anastasija Pavić will present works in various artistic media - from photographs to videos and interactive installations - and the topics of their works concern the relationship to the body, body expression, sexuality, identity.

In their works, the authors open different questions: how the discourse of a desirable and healthy body affects our perception of our own corporeality, what brings acceptance of our own body and its socially constructed or physically conditioned "imperfections", what is the relationship of non-normative sexuality to the body; in art and through art he re-examines his own identity, corporeality, but also sexuality.

In the catalog of the exhibition, curator Ana Simona Zelenović explains:

This exhibition aims to point out a new perspective on body observation. The ability to accept and see the body as "healthy" regardless of differences and imposed discourse. To see the body as an integral part of being, and not something that is exclusively a source of "errors". In Dunja Đolović's collages, the process of accepting the body as it is is lyrically presented as flourishing, flowering, re-empathy with one's bodily identity through its contextualization in relation to nature.

The exhibition also ironically wants to criticize the discourse that produces supposedly "healthy bodies", and in fact destroys the bodily integrity of persons through systemic violence against the body. As we see in the works of Anastasia Pavić and Nikola Dimitrović, the body is shaped by discourse, discourse produces both desire and sexuality, our bodies and their behaviors are socially constructed with different markers.

Their works are an attempt to re-examine the process of that construction and its consequences with self-irony, with a critical edge directed towards society. The works of Kosta Đuraković show us a male view of the male body, while in the works of Aleksandra Branković we come across a female view of the female body. In doing so, the exhibition further seeks to support in institutions the muted or marginalized voices of queer artists, or those who speak on queer topics.

"The depiction of my relationship with the body contrasts with the capitalist portrayal and consumption of the body through marketing, Instagram, photography, developing the distance between us and our bodies. I treated the body as a landscape, nature, putting it in counterpoint with real nature", he explained. works at exhibitions by artist Kosta Đuraković.

This exhibition represents a contribution to that struggle and promotes the possibility of accepting our body in a new context of health that brings acceptance and love for one's own body.

The artistic activity of Irina Iosip is both practical and theoretical. She is an artist from Bucharest, Romania with numerous participations on group exhibitions, and solo shows, both nationally and internationally. Irina Iosip also published numerous articles. Irina Iosip - “I always seek to experiment with new media, to produce things with meaning, and to leave behind palpable traces. I have been passionate about satirical easel and press graphics for many years and, even if I do not currently make drawings in this genre, I have never left the field, considering that it is still an important pawn in the necessary adjustments in society. I still organize salons and humorous drawing exhibitions. I mention that in 2010 I founded and organized The International "Salt & Pepper" Satirical Art Salon, this being the first humorous salon in Romania with judging and exhibition exclusively online, which has reached, for now, the third edition... Who would have thought, before the "pandemic" of Covid-19 that, at some point, the only space for the dissemination of cultural events will be the cybernetic?”, highlights the artist.

Tell us about your art practice in general, about what you pursue in art.

Irina Iosip - „In my art practice I am interested in everything that incites the intellect and the spirit, which has to do with the human being in general, and with the society. Sometimes I choose simple topics that somehow enticed me to study or render them imagistically. I have time and energy. I am looking for beauty that is timeless, of those that vibrate resonating with the DNA of the surrounding nature. Often, after a period of conceptual search, I return to nature, to recalibrate to the creative energies, to the essence of life perceived with all the human senses and faculties with which we have been endowed.

Inside the artistic act, I am especially attracted by the expressiveness of color. Working with dry pastel is one of the preferred techniques, which is very delicate, because it does not allow erasures or overlaps of layers without diminishing the essential quality of this material, that of changing its shade depending on the nature and intensity of light (natural or artificial ), its angle of reflection, of the season, of the hour of the day. This is due to the peculiarity of pastel crystals which, pure or mixed, reflect light differently in different conditions. The material and structure of the support (surface, degree of absorption of the pastel, color and acidity of the paper) are also very important in highlighting the qualities of this material and in the stability of the quality and expressiveness of the work”, concludes the artist.

58th October Salon, Belgrade Biennale 2021

The 58th October Salon - Belgrade Biennale has opened! "Dreamers" is an exhibition that brings together 64 international artists from all over the world.

Most of them have never exhibited in Belgrade or the Balkans before!

The October Salon or recently the Belgrade Biennale is an exhibition where the audience has the opportunity to see current achievements and new productions of artists from all over the world. Most of the works are presented for the first time in Belgrade at this year's exhibition, and some works represent new productions that were made just for this exhibition, that is, the concept of "Dreamer".

The choice of curators to invite the younger, ie the middle generation of artists was certainly completed by the works of already established names on the world stage such as Pierre Uig, Henri Sale, Jeremy Deler, Cao Fei, Mark Leki, which were relevant to curators for their research on this topic.

The exhibition features authors working in a wide range of media: video, performance, spatial installations, painting, sculptures - exploring different topics from those related to policies related to culture and identity, alienation and psychological aspects of human experience.

The exhibition of works, to single out some of them, Claudia Conte, Wong Ping, John Raffman, David Duar, Margarit Imo, Clara Hoznedlove, in the Museum of the City of Belgrade in Resavska transform the dimensions of space and draws visitors into a universe that is both foreign and famous.

The works of Sonja Radaković and Sanja Ćopić were specially performed during the opening weekend, and their traces can only be guessed at in the installation; while the work of Alex da Corte "Blue Moon" can be reported, viewed and participate in the living room or bedroom through a television screen and RTS3 channel (every evening from 20.55).

The 58th October Salon will be accompanied by a rich program - public guided tours, thematic guided tours, workshops for children and youth, talk with artists, and for fans of outdoor activities, every other weekend will be organized "October picnic" in the park in front of the Museum of Yugoslavia.

Artist Viorica Ciucanu was born in 1961, in the village of Potoci, near of Ceahlău mountain. She first trained in the studio of the artist Arcadie Răileanu, then she studied painting in the academic environment of the “George Enescu” National University of Arts in Iași.

Interview

For starters, please tell us your story and a few things about your artistic journey.

V.C. - When I finished high school, art couldn't be my choice. There are times when you can and others when you can't choose a certain path to go on in life. It's so simple and so complicated at the same time ... In 2006 I started studying with the artist Arcadie Răileanu. I like to say that I studied at "Răileanu University". At the time, it seemed too late to go to an art university. However, I already had 12 personal exhibitions and over 50 participations in group exhibitions in the country and abroad, but to find my "place in the puzzle", in 2017 I was admitted to the National University of Arts "George Enescu" Iași and it didn't seem too late anymore.

What are you looking for in art and daily practice?

In my artistic practice I focus on 3 main concepts / projects with which I work constantly: Contemplating, where the main subject is the Ceahlău mountain, the surroundings and other dear places where I travel.

The 5 elements: earth, water, air, fire and spirit. The joining of these elements gives shape to the world and are closely related to the golden number 1,618 which has a very special importance, especially in art. It is considered the most beautiful number in the entire universe. Both the soul and the human body are subject to the laws that govern the harmony of the cosmos, so that the micro and macro-cosmos, the world we live in, appear mathematically and aesthetically connected at the same time. This phi number, the ancients believe, was dictated by God.

Human complexity, a project that makes a foray into recent history, from Don Quixote, the Myth of Sisyphus to Iphon and Drona, in the idea that art is what facilitates communication in time and space, people have the same anxieties and only differ the way of expression according to time and the discoveries of the weather. On this concept, we organized traveling exhibitions at the Bal Shem Tov Synagogue in Piatra Neamț, the Labyrinth Gallery in Iași and the Galateca Gallery, Bucharest.

I am not looking for a realistic reproduction of the visible, but for its vision. As Mondrian used to say, "what does the eye remember when it chooses to forget the visible world?" Today we live in a very good period for art, I think, in which there are not so many barriers and restrictions. The contemporary artist has total freedom of expression. Contemporary art wants to stimulate not only the eye of the beholder, but also his mind.

Which are the art techniques that you prefer and in which you think you express yourself best?

From a technical point of view, I work a lot in oil, I often resort to painting on old wood and I also have a penchant for performance. I recently made a conceptual work - a "gate" on a hill in my village Potoci, oriented in the direction of Mount Ceahlau, which I called Liberation.

Talk briefly about your most special experiences.

I had the privilege of participating in many creative and documentary camps and events, completed with exhibitions in Italy, in Genoa, Florence, Perugia, Siena, Sardinia and others in Turkey and Spain.

Which artists inspire your work?

I find inspiration in the work of Rembrandt, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miro and the performance of Marina Abramovici. Brâncuși is the one who profoundly influenced my modern concept of creation, formally combining the simplicity of Romanian folk art with the refinement of the Parisian avant-garde.

"She and I" / Painting exhibition by Svetlana Ninković and Sara Kujundžić in Silos

The first joint exhibition of painters Svetlana Ninković and Sara Kujundžić entitled "She and I" opened on Friday, July 2, at 8 pm, in the exhibition space of the Re-creative Center Silosi Belgrade. The exhibition will last until July 10, and it will be available to visitors every day from 6 to 10 pm in the chambers of the first silo.

The artists state that their intention is to explore and move the boundaries of the artistic ego through a series of abstract paintings. By sharing the same canvas during the creative process, the painters simultaneously open the question of mutual space and deep intimacy between them. They invite each other to create, upgrade or change together what has already been created.

Svetlana Ninković graduated in 2006 from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, at the graphic department, and is a member of the "Art Circle". She has exhibited in 20 solos and about 30 group exhibitions in the country and abroad and participated in several art colonies and meetings. After graduating from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, Sara Kujundzic went abroad, where she built her career in the waters of marketing and graphic design, and the teams that created under her art direction won internationally recognized awards in the field of advertising. Svetlana and Sara were in the same class, after which they remained close friends, and the exhibition She and I will show the works they sing together, which is a kind of a rarity in the world of fine arts.

This exhibition will also be the first in the newly opened Silos and announces a future gallery in the same place, dedicated to the local art scene. The Silos themselves are a kind of monument of brutalist architecture on the banks of the Danube, and they got new life thanks to the "Gaia Movement", a non-profit foundation that develops programs in the field of art, education, recreational sports, and environmental protection.

Within the Silos, the Honey Garden and Urban Gardens have already been opened, as well as the Ponta bar as a gathering place for a wider social scene, and a summer stage has started for panel discussions, theater performances, and musical performances, as well as yoga and other forms of education. and recreation. In addition to the planned gallery, Silosi will soon contain an interactive museum and event center, and other facilities throughout the year.

The entrance to the Silos zone is located at the end of Dunavski kej Street, number 46, in Dorćol, behind the ramp of the former "Žitomlin" factory, and it is open to visitors every day from 12 noon to midnight.

„PRESENT: INVISIBLE” / Photography exhibition by Teodor Bădărău

The Union of Visual Artists from Romania - Iași Branch presented between 11 and 20 June 2021, in the space of „N. Tonitza ” Gallery the photography exhibition “PRESENT: INVISIBLE ” signed by artist Teodor Bădărău, a project curated by Cătălin Gheorghe.

“The change of urban life subscribes to the way of (self) structuring the landscape. Photography can de-document the experience of traversing a space which, as a feeling, becomes a meeting point between a way of conceiving the transversality of the message of artistic research and a way of working with the effects of post-photography. In a succession of scenic frames and metac frames of the representation, through a crossing of a context through immersive acts and detachment reflections, the presence is associated with an aura of invisibility that short-circuits the meaning of photography and the rhetoric of its exposure ", said the curator about the most recent project of the photographer Teodor Bădărău.

On the occasion of a past photographic project of the same artist, focused on the same type of photographic research, called "ON THE EDGE OF A SPECULATIVE SPACE", exhibition organized by Vector Studio and UNAGE, also curated by Cătălin Gheorghe, the curator said that in his project 'research based on photography', Teodor Bădărău processes 'the space outside the exhibition space' through simulation, representation and interpretation, involving the relations 'previous authorial presence' - 'initial absence of the viewer' in an act of construction of a 'differential network' paradoxes in which loneliness, alienation and nihilism are engaged with interventionism, intersubjectivism and experiential conceptualism. His research does not involve a linear investigation that would start from an intuition, would document the factuality of the space of the gaze in an objectively observational way, would select the data confirmed by the work process experiment, would design the representation system to communicate as convincingly as possible the experience of conception. but it involves creating a receptive experience that puts the audience in a situation of ambiguity and then immerses them in a reflection of subsequent clarification of wonder.

"According to the artist, the aim is to investigate the subsidiary of the image, the issues related to the positioning of the photographer, the camera, the viewer, and, thus, the situation of the subject of representation and the subject in an unclear intersectionality, as long as the image is negative , thus provoking an experience of the fracture between “reality” and its representation as a product of a subjective perception and reaction, from the perspective of authorial individuality. About the artist

Teodor Bădărău is a PhD student at the Faculty of Visual Arts and Design at the “George Enescu” National University of Arts in Iași. He has contributed works of art for the exhibitions: “About the Plan and its development” (2014, Iaşi); “City Times” (2014, Vaslui); “EV> V” (2015, Iaşi); “Tunnels. Directions ”(2015, Iaşi); “PhotoRomânia Festival - Essentialis” (2015, Cluj); “Reterritorializations” (2015, Bacău); “Take or Make” (2016, Bacău); “Run in background” (2016, Iaşi). On Thursday, June 17, at 7 pm, in the U10 gallery, the exhibition On the Other Side of the Sea by the French artist Clemon Bedel will be opened. The exhibition will be open until July 3.

"What is painting, if it is not a certain existence in the world (in Heidegger's sense) on a piece of canvas?" This existence in the world, this ontological connection with the temporality and transcendence of Clemon Bedel, allows the viewer to wander freely through the image or images, to perceive separate fragments of the biosphere and the remains of infrastructures in which human presence and logic exist only as phantom silhouettes. No dominant object will attract his attention, nor a great narrative that will conceptually hold him.

The other side of the sea is neither post-consumerist nor post-apocalyptic. It is the reconciling effect of living with the trouble that was initially caused by the force of the fall of civilization, rather than by the force of nature. In this abolition of world perspectives concerning dramatic flowering, Bedel finds a new perspective. He does this by articulating otherwise traumatic interweaving of planes that are more antagonistic than complementary. About the artist

Clemon Bedel is a French visual artist, born in 1993 in Strasbourg. In 2012, he enrolled at the National School of Art and Design in Nancy, where he mainly focused on installations and performance. After his stay at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade within the exchange program in 2016, he completely turned his attention to painting. After completing his master's studies at the National School of Art and Design, he returned to Belgrade, where he was a visiting student at the Faculty of Fine Arts.

He has had exhibitions in Serbia, Germany, and France, including a solo exhibition of paintings Shining through Reality at the City Cultural Center in Belgrade in May 2019 and participation in the Biennial of Young Creativity in Contemporary Art "MULUZ 019". in June 2019. After living in Belgrade for four years and residing in residencies, developing projects in Leipzig (2019) and Istanbul (2020), he now lives and works in Mulhouse, France.

The 64th edition of the annual international photojournalism exhibition "World Press Photo" can also be visited this year, for the 10th time in Romania, in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara, between May and July 2021. On June 1st, a video material was broadcast on the Facebook page of the Art Museum in Cluj-Napoca, which marked the opening of the exhibition. The "World Press Photo" competition recognizes quality photojournalism and rewards images and stories from around the world. This year, 4,315 photographers from 130 countries around the world submitted 74,470 images. For the first time, starting this year, the exhibition is accompanied by a content project that analyzes the role and social impact of responsible journalism, the fake news phenomenon and misinformation, to be announced in this regard a series of shows, podcasts and debates that will run throughout the summer.

The event in Cluj-Napoca is part of the annual international exhibition "World Press Photo", traveling around the world, being exhibited in over 100 spaces in over 45 countries and visited by over 4.5 million people at each edition. The prestigious photojournalism exhibition connects the public to the social reality around the world, told visually through the photos of the most famous photojournalists in the world.

"We are glad that we have the opportunity to bring a symbolic exhibition for quality journalism in Romania, for the 10th time in a row, with the desire to increase the interest of Romanians for documentary photography. This year we are stronger and more determined by everything we will bring to the Romanian community in our fight against fake news and the effects of this phenomenon ", says Cristian Movilă, founder of Eidos Foundation and representative of "World Press Photo" in Romania.

Starting with 2016, the exhibition presented in Bucharest was seen by about 52,000 visitors, who had the opportunity of a unique experience in the country. Due to the reputed impact and success in the capital, in 2017 the exhibition went from the National Museum of Art of Romania to the Art Museum of Timisoara, and with the 2018 edition began to be hosted, without interruption, by the Art Museum of Cluj.
